Kristell in Wonderland

Kristell In Wonderland (aka Kristell Lowagie), born in 1980 in the heart of Europe, is a visual artist who combines studio photography and digital collage. She has Belgian, Polish and Jewish roots. Her great-aunt and second cousin died in Auschwitz during the Second World War. Her Jewish grandfather was hidden by her grandmother throughout the war. These family stories have strongly influenced her view of the world.

When she was 11, she watched the Tim Burton film “Edward Scissorhands” and it had a great artistic impact on her. She devoted the next 25 years of her life to rock and metal music as a singer. During these musical years, she had to work on the groups’ visuals: creation of logos, album covers, group photo shoots and even clips.

She studied advertising at IHECS in Brussels. She also studied graphic design. After working on the artwork for her solo album in 2017, she decided to create artwork based on Alice in Wonderland. She took pictures of her daughter (6) and mixed the pictures with a digital collage. Kristell In Wonderland was born.

The artist revisits fairy tales, offers a cynical version of the pin-up or reinterprets ecological and social dramas in her own poetic way. She offers photographic and digital compositions, mixing vintage, kitsch, religious iconography, modern and fantastic symbols.

First obsessed with portraying little girls and their innocence, she now photographs people of different ages, backgrounds and personalities. Each image has its own story.
