Giraffe

Small slate in black rough clay with black engobe, naive animal drawing in coloured glazing.

A part of the exposition ‘et si je sortais de ma bulle rose’

Description

At a time when the need for a radical shift towards a sustainable and just society – one that values nature and life – is more urgent than ever, the relentless destruction of the environment seems to be accelerating, while conflicts and injustices against peoples are becoming more visible and violent than ever.

et si je sortais de ma bulle rose embodies my way of coping with these uncertain times.

It marks my awakening from a naive belief in the inevitability of justice. And happily so, because it confronts me only with the privilege of my own life. This awakening forced me to step out of my comfort zone and engage in protest.

In my work on vases and slabs, I depict flora and fauna with naive, almost abstract drawings on objects that feel both brutal and fragile. They are like a solace to my troubled mind, fighting the darkness of reality with playfulness and poetry. A celebration of the beauty and resilience of nature.

The sculptures I create reflect the dualities I experience today and manifest in two series. On the one hand, I want to depict humanity as I perceive it now – witnessing atrocities through screens, feeling the urge to scream but remaining paralysed. I use these phallic figures as a humorous critique of our oil-driven, male-dominated society.

On the other hand, I try to express moments that define our human nature, love, pain and joy, and almost as a form of resistance, choose to keep faith in the values that define humanity.

And, in a way, my bulle rose becomes a kind of protest in itself.
