Author : Dave Decat

Dave Decat, illustrator and poster artist from Brussels, has been tirelessly exploring, since the beginning of the 2000s, the colorful universe of mobsters that he magnifies. Whether it was the criminal gangs of Belle Époque Paris, the Apaches who wanted to show off and parade, the tattooed thugs or other convicts.

Decat draws his ideas and the material for the imaginary portraits he creates from this coded and stylized world. Inspired by Anatole Steinlen or the imagery conveyed by period newspapers such as Le Petit Journal. To enrich his universe, the designer also drew on precise literary and cinematographic references that he made his own, such as Du rififi chez les hommes by Auguste le Breton, a classic of detective literature or Bob le flambeur by Jean-Pierre. Melville whose codes he digested and then reinterpreted. Always fascinated by freaks, misfits and outcasts of all stripes, Dave Decat has also devoted his work to those who were called “hooligans” in the 1980s and to heavy metal rock fans.

The book is divided into thematic chapters that follow one another in the chronological order of Dave Decat’s creations. We will also find in this volume a text in which the artist shares his story, his journey and his creative process while giving the keys to his graphic universe.

We gradually slip into a gallery of portraits, real “faces” represented with a palpable empathy and creating an interest in a world that we are discovering and a continuing curiosity for the special universe created by Decat. The artist’s work has taken place in media as varied as posters, drawings, record covers and book covers. However, his precise and unique style is obviously coherent and will succeed in creating a sort of Stockhlom syndrome, transmitting to the reader an obvious empathy, even a real affection for this gallery of characters.
