The End of The Fucking World – Charles Forsman

Michel, Pierre Maurel’s rough-and-tumble forty-something, returns for a third episode. This time, love, the real kind, the one you vacuum for, seems to have knocked on his door. But the problems don’t stop raining for all that. In France, where social conflict is rampant, Michel cannot remain indifferent and keep his journalistic equipment in his pocket, nor his tongue for that matter. As he is not really suited to adventure, it is also under a rain of hard knocks, not always metaphorical, that our staid anti-hero will run. Whether he is walking through tear gas at a demonstration, at an opening of contemporary art, at work in a temp job or walking along a green country road, Michel is always furiously close to us, to our hopes, our outbursts and unanswered questions about this hyper-connected and yet sober world of ours.

Pierre Maurel’s nervous drawing and his figures captured on the spot decorate the shortcomings of our times. With humour, intelligence, and through situations and characters that are more complex than they appear.

Michel et Le Grand schisme is the final opus of the trilogy that began in 2018 with Les Temps modernes. For the author, it is an opportunity to tackle current issues in the form of a moral comedy that is both sympathetic and irritating. Today’s social movements, scooters with geolocation, but also a raging desire to change the model of our society. This latest opus is more jovial and open to the unknown.
