Le Bord du gouffre – Noah Van Sciver

“Le Bord du gouffre” tells the story of four days in a man’s life, four days in which unfortunate events coincide to bring Joe down. With fatalism, but skilfully avoiding pathos, Noah Van Sciver depicts the living conditions of America’s destitute. A realistic state of precariousness that he knows well, having worked in fast-food restaurants before his career as an author took off. Published in the United States some time before the Fante Bukowski trilogy, this work, which is much darker and more pessimistic, already shows the young author’s interest in romantic figures, lost illusions and the complexity of the human comedy.

To pay his rent and support his small family, Joe has no choice but to accept as much overtime as possible at the pizza shop where he works. Completely broke, he is forced to walk home after his evening shift, while it has been raining like crazy for days.

He loves Nicole, his wife, but still blames her for this unstable situation. If they hadn’t had the baby, things might be different. To top it all off, his drug-addicted mother-in-law moves in with them after leaving her partner. So he drinks more than he can handle, even if it means looking like a real bastard to his family and colleagues at the restaurant. Joe is at rock bottom, and only divine intervention can get him out of this predicament.
